ALPHA MENTORING PROGRAM (AMP)
The Iota Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. facilitates a comprehensive mentoring program for high school males within the Albuquerque community. This program is called the ALPHA MENTORING PROGRAM (AMP).
AMP is designed to address the academic, social, and cultural needs of young minority high school males. Members of the AMP initiative are mentored closely throughout their freshmen and sophomore years of high school in the areas of academic excellence, community awareness, and cultural activism. In subsequent high school years (Junior and Senior) the young men continue participation in the program as student mentors and role models for the subsequent entering mentees. All AMP students will build positive relationships with male role models from under-represented populations that will impact their academic performance, their community consciousness and their advocacy efforts for all. Application & Enrollment
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Iota Psi Lambda Chapter will admit 7 freshman from Highland High School into the Alpha Mentorship Program (AMP) each fall. Applications will be available May of the preceding year. Applications will require a one-page essay discussing "Why Mentorship is Beneficial to Me". For applications click below:
Community & Cultural Awareness
AMP is designed to expose students to culturally relevant and positive activities within their local community. AMP also provides its participants with training on relevant topics such as interacting with the law enforcement and other figures of authority they may encounter. AMP also promotes active community engagement by not only transporting students to local community activities, but also by bringing influential community members to the students.
Go-2-Highschool, Go-2-College
The "Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College" program is one of the four national programs of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This program was established in 1922 emphasizes to young people the tremendous importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success, the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College program endeavors to provide young men with information and strategies that facilitate academic success. The AMP Program is one of Iota Psi Lambda Chapter's direct implementations of the National Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College program locally within the Albuquerque community.
Project Alpha
The "Project Alpha" program is another one of the four national programs of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Project Alpha began being implemented collaboratively with the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. This collaborative project is designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young males. Designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention, Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers.The AMP program has partnered with the administration, teachers and staff of Highland High School to implement these seminars.
